Microneedling

Microneedling recovery: an honest day-by-day account

Know exactly what to expect and do after a microneedling session

Quick summary
  • Expect sunburn-like redness for 24–48 hours and light flaking around day three to five.
  • The aftercare window is short but strict — this is where results are won or lost.
Part of a bigger topic

This page answers one question in depth. For the complete picture, start with Microneedling.

Day by day

Day zero: flushed, warm and tight once the numbing wears off. Day one to two: redness fades to pink, skin feels rough like fine sandpaper. Day three to five: light flaking as the surface renews; most people return to makeup here. Week two onward: texture starts looking smoother as new collagen forms — the part nobody photographs but the part that matters.

  1. Day 0
    Session day

Skin looks flushed, similar to mild sunburn. Numbing cream wears off within an hour.

  2. Day 1–2
    Redness settles

Tightness and mild sensitivity. Barrier cream and SPF only — no actives.

  3. Day 3–5
    Light flaking

Fine peeling as the surface renews. Makeup usually acceptable from day 3.

  4. Week 2–4
    Early collagen

Texture looks smoother, pores appear tighter as new collagen begins forming.

  5. Month 2–3
    Visible remodelling

Scar depth and tone improve cumulatively across a planned series.

Typical recovery and collagen-remodelling window after a session.

What to use, and what to shelve

  • Use: a bland non-foaming cleanser, a ceramide or hyaluronic moisturiser, mineral SPF 50
  • Shelve for 5–7 days: retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, scrubs, clay masks
  • Skip for 48 hours: makeup, gym sweat, steam, sauna, swimming
  • Never: picking at flakes, or booking another facial 'to speed it up'
Do
  • Bland cleanser, ceramide moisturiser, SPF 50 reapplied through the day
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase and keep hands off the treated area
  • Drink water and keep meals protein-adequate — healing is metabolic work
  • Message the clinic early if anything looks unusual
Don't
  • No retinoids, AHAs, BHAs or vitamin C for the window your clinician sets
  • No steam, sauna, hot yoga, swimming or gym sweat for 48 hours
  • No picking, scrubbing or 'helping' flakes come away
  • No new actives or facials booked elsewhere during the healing window
The first 72 hours decide how comfortable and even your result looks.

When to contact the clinic

  • Spreading redness with heat and increasing pain after day two
  • Yellow crusting or pus — possible infection
  • Blistering, or clustered painful vesicles suggesting a cold-sore flare
  • Any reaction that is worsening rather than settling at 72 hours

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to work the next day?+

Most people do. Expect visible pink flushing on day one; mineral sunscreen tones it down and makeup is generally fine from day three.

Is flaking necessary for it to have worked?+

No. Flaking varies with depth and skin type, and its absence does not mean the session was ineffective.

When can I restart retinoids?+

Usually day five to seven, reintroduced at half your previous frequency.

Key takeaways

What to remember
  • Redness for two days and flaking around day three is normal
  • Bland care and strict sun protection for a week
  • Worsening after 72 hours is not part of normal healing
