Microneedling — the complete Mumbai guide
How microneedling actually works, everything it can (and cannot) treat, and the honest, session-by-session experience at Nayami Cosmyc.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy (CIT) — is a controlled skin-injury technique. A sterile device with ultra-fine needles creates thousands of vertical micro-channels in the dermis. These are small enough to heal without scarring, but real enough to trigger the body's wound-healing cascade — which produces fresh collagen, elastin and new blood vessels over the following weeks.
The point is not the needles. The point is the collagen your skin makes in the six months after them.
How microneedling works — the biology
- Day 0 · sessionControlled micro-injury
Thousands of vertical channels through epidermis into the papillary and upper reticular dermis.
- Hours 0–24Inflammatory phase
Platelets release growth factors — PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF — kicking off the healing cascade.
- Days 2–7Proliferative phase
Fibroblasts migrate in and start laying down new collagen and elastin. Redness settles.
- Weeks 2–8Remodelling phase
New collagen is organised into stronger, better-aligned bundles. Texture and tone visibly shift.
- Months 2–6Ongoing remodelling
Collagen continues to remodel and thicken for up to six months after each session — which is why results keep improving between visits.
What microneedling can treat
- Skin rejuvenation and glow — improved texture, tone and a visible refinement of everyday skin quality.
- Acne scars — atrophic macular, boxcar and rolling scars. Best when combined with subcision and PRP. See our acne scars guide.
- Open pores — one of the most consistent wins, especially with RF microneedling.
- Stretch marks — post-pregnancy and post-weight-change striae respond well over 6–10 sessions.
- Fine lines — around the eyes, upper lip and forehead.
- Pigmentation and post-acne marks — as part of a combined pigment plan, not as the primary treatment for melasma.
- Hair thinning — scalp microneedling is used as a delivery and stimulation technique alongside PRP for early androgenetic patterns.
Depth and devices — why 'how deep' matters
Product absorption, mild glow. Home rollers live here — and cannot remodel scars.
Refinement of texture, tone and pore appearance. Comfortable, minimal downtime.
Reaches the reticular dermis. This is the working depth for most acne scar and rejuvenation plans.
Radiofrequency energy delivered into the dermis for stronger collagen contraction.
Are you a candidate?
| Good candidate | Not right now |
|---|---|
| Acne scars, open pores, dull skin | Active inflammatory / cystic acne |
| Post-acne marks or textural change | Recent oral isotretinoin (usually wait 6 months) |
| Stretch marks, mild laxity | Pregnancy or active infection |
| Fitzpatrick I–VI skin types | Keloid-prone history — needs careful assessment |
| Realistic expectations, willing to do 4–8 sessions | Wanting a one-session miracle |
Before care — the week that decides your result
- Stop retinoids 3–5 days before your session
- Continue sunscreen daily — a tanned face heals differently
- Hydrate well; avoid alcohol the night before
- Let us know about any cold sore history so we can pre-treat
- Come with a clean face — no makeup, no fresh threading
- No scrubs, acids or acid peels 3 days before
- No threading or waxing on the treatment area 48 hours before
- No sunbathing the week before
- No new skincare product introductions in the days before
What actually happens in a session
- 0:00Consultation & consent
Confirm indications, review photos, plan depth and areas.
- 0:05Cleanse & numbing
Face is cleansed; topical anaesthetic is applied for 30–45 minutes.
- 0:45The needling itself
The device is passed across each zone in a systematic pattern — 15–25 minutes for a full face.
- 1:10Serum, mask, LED
PRP or a hyaluronic-acid serum is worked into the channels; a calming mask and LED finish.
- 1:30Aftercare briefing
You leave with a written aftercare card and your next-session date.
Recovery timeline — hour by hour, day by day
- Hour 0–4Warmth, mild redness
Skin looks like mild sunburn. Sensation is fine within an hour.
- Hour 24Redness settles
Most patients are comfortable in makeup. Makeup allowed after 24h (48h for RF).
- Day 2–3Slight tightness / dryness
Use only the recommended barrier moisturiser and mineral SPF. Some patients see a fine bronzing which sheds naturally.
- Day 5–7Back to normal skincare
Actives are reintroduced gradually. First glow shift is often visible now.
- Week 4–6Collagen shift
This is when scar and pore improvement becomes visible. Photograph before this to see the change.
After care checklist
- Bland ceramide moisturiser 3–4x on day one
- Mineral SPF 50, reapplied throughout the day
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase, face up for 24h
- Return for the review or next session as scheduled
- No sauna, steam, swimming or hot yoga for 72 hours
- No actives (retinoids, acids, vitamin C) for 5–7 days
- No makeup for 24 hours (48h after RF microneedling)
- No picking of dry flakes — let them shed on their own
How many sessions will you need?
| Goal | Typical sessions | Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Skin quality / glow / pores | 3–4 | 4 weeks |
| Post-acne marks | 3–6 | 4 weeks |
| Acne scars (mild) | 4–6 | 4–6 weeks |
| Acne scars (moderate–deep) | 6–10 + combination techniques | 4–6 weeks |
| Stretch marks | 6–10 | 4–6 weeks |
| Hair thinning (scalp) | 6–8 with PRP | 3–4 weeks |
Side effects and safety
Microneedling is one of the safest energy-based procedures available for Indian skin when performed correctly. Expected effects are mild redness, temporary tightness and dryness. Rare and manageable effects include pinpoint bleeding, transient breakouts, mild bruising after deep sessions and reactivation of cold sores in patients with a prior history.
Realistic expectations
Microneedling is a slow-burn treatment. The first two sessions build a base. Real, obvious change usually shows from session three onwards, and continues improving for up to six months after your final session. That is not a marketing line — it is the collagen biology of your own skin.
What we do not promise: instant glass-skin, permanent zero pores or 100% scar erasure. What is honest and repeatable: visibly smoother texture, refined pores, softened scars, an even tone, and skin that photographs better than it did.
What microneedling costs in Mumbai — and what drives the price
Patients rarely ask "what is the price"; they are really asking "what am I paying for, and how many times". Four variables decide the cost of a microneedling course in Mumbai, and understanding them protects you from both overspending and underdosing.
| Cost driver | Why it moves the price | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Device | RF microneedling costs more per session than a motorised dermapen because of the energy platform and consumables. | We recommend RF only where depth or laxity genuinely needs it. |
| Treatment area | Full face, face + neck, scalp, abdomen or thighs consume different cartridge counts and time. | Area is fixed at assessment so your quote does not drift. |
| Add-ons | PRP, exosomes or growth-factor serums add both material and processing cost. | Added only where they shorten downtime or improve the outcome. |
| Session count | Skin quality needs 3–4; moderate-to-deep scarring needs 6–10 with combination techniques. | Your full course is quoted up front, not visit by visit. |
We do not publish a single headline price because an honest number depends on your skin. Send a photo on WhatsApp to 8080627862 and you will get an indicative range before you travel to the clinic.
Common mistakes, and myths worth retiring
- Complete the full course — stopping at session two wastes the base you paid for
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily for at least two weeks after each session
- Pause retinoids and acids for 3–5 days before and after, as instructed
- Treat active acne or infection first, then start needling
- Ask to see the sealed single-use cartridge opened in front of you
- Chasing deeper needling in the belief that more depth means faster results
- Booking microneedling days before a wedding, shoot or holiday
- Layering strong actives, scrubs or facials into the healing window
- Comparing your week-one skin with someone else's month-six photographs
- Choosing the cheapest quote without asking about supervision and sterility
| Myth | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Microneedling is unsafe for brown Indian skin | It is one of the safest textural options for Fitzpatrick IV–V precisely because pigment cells are largely preserved. |
| One session will clear acne scars | Scar remodelling is cumulative; meaningful change starts around session three and continues for months after the last one. |
| Dermarollers at home give the same result | Home rollers cannot control depth or sterility. They are the most common cause of the marks we later have to treat. |
| More bleeding means better results | Pinpoint bleeding is a marker of depth, not of outcome. Excess trauma raises pigmentation risk without improving collagen. |
| Results are permanent | Collagen built holds 9–18 months; ageing continues, which is why maintenance exists. |

Frequently asked questions
Is microneedling painful?+
Sensation is described as prickly warmth, not sharp pain. A topical numbing cream is applied for 30–45 minutes before treatment, so most patients rate discomfort as 2–3 out of 10 during the session.
How long does redness last after microneedling?+
For most Indian skin types, mild redness lasts 24–48 hours. Deeper protocols (scar work, RF microneedling) can leave pinpoint redness for 3–5 days. There is no visible pigment change if aftercare is followed.
How many sessions will I need?+
Skin quality and pore refinement: 3–4 sessions, monthly. Acne scars: 4–8 sessions. Stretch marks: 6–10 sessions. We reassess after every 3 sessions with clinical photos.
Can microneedling be done on darker Indian skin (Fitzpatrick IV–V)?+
Yes — that is one of its biggest advantages over laser resurfacing. Because the epidermis and pigment cells are largely preserved, microneedling is one of the safest textural treatments for brown skin.
What is the difference between dermaroller and dermapen?+
Dermapen is a motorised vertical needling device with adjustable depth and disposable sterile tips. It creates cleaner channels and better precision, especially near the eyes and around scars. Dermarollers are largely outdated for professional use.
Is microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) better?+
For medium-to-deep scars, open pores and mild skin laxity, yes. RF adds thermal collagen stimulation deeper in the dermis. For skin quality, glow and shallow marks, plain microneedling is usually enough.
Can I combine microneedling with PRP?+
Yes — this is one of our most requested combinations. PRP acts as a healing accelerator, delivering growth factors into the fresh microchannels. It typically shortens downtime and strengthens the collagen response.
Is there any downtime?+
You return to normal life the same day. Makeup can be worn from 24 hours after standard microneedling and 48 hours after RF microneedling. Sun protection is non-negotiable for two weeks after.
How much does microneedling cost in Mumbai?+
Cost in Mumbai is driven by four things: the device used (plain dermapen versus RF microneedling), the treatment area, whether PRP or exosomes are added, and how many sessions your goal genuinely needs. Skin-quality courses of 3–4 sessions cost far less overall than deep scar work needing 6–10. We quote your full course in writing after assessing your skin — no per-visit surprises and no upselling.
Is cheaper microneedling ever a false economy?+
Often, yes. Very low prices usually mean reused cartridges, under-dosed depth, or a technician without medical supervision — which is where infections, tram-track marks and wasted money come from. Ask any clinic to open a sealed single-use cartridge in front of you; we do that as standard.
How long do microneedling results last?+
Collagen built through a proper course typically holds for 9–18 months. Ageing continues, so most patients keep one maintenance session every 4–6 months rather than repeating the full course.
